Post-doc on fire regimes and climate in the Mediterranean Basin CEAM, Spain 17 February

We wish to recruit an enthusiastic researcher to work in the European project CIRCE. Specifically the research will be to study the relationship between climate and wildfire regime in the Mediterranean Basin . The successful candidate is expected to be able to work with large datasets and to produce high quality scientific papers (SCI).

Requirements:

- PhD in Physics, Biology or a related science
- Fluent English writing
- Demonstrable experience in research
- Demonstrable experience in statistical analyses
- Scientific publications

Merits :

- Number, quality and impact of the publications
- Experience in the analysis of large databases
- Experience in the analysis of time series
- Knowledge of R language
- Knowledge of programming languages
- Possibility of immediate incorporation to the position

The research will be developed in collaboration between the Meteorology group at CEAM ( Valencia ) and the Plant Ecology group at CIDE (CSIC, Valencia ), and supervised by Juli G. Pausas . The successful candidate will be contracted as a researcher at CEAM under the CIRCE project. Salary will depend on the merits of the candidate, but higher than 23390 euros gross annual. The contract will finish by the 31/12/2010.

Senior Research Associate Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Potsdam, Germany No expiry date

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research seeks an experienced researcher to work within the CIRCE Integrated Project, funded under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme. CIRCE aims to highlight impacts and possible adaptation actions to climate change in the Mediterranean region (including Europe, North Africa and Middle East). The suitable candidate will evaluate economic and social consequences of climate change, focusing particularly on three crucial sectors for the Mediterranean region: agriculture, energy and tourism.
Applicants for the position must possess appropriate scientific competence in relevant fields at a level equivalent to a doctorate (PhD), including an international publication record. Strong analytical, programming (preferably Mathematica, R), and modelling skills are a must, knowledge of the Spanish or Italian language are an asset.
All applicants should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team and exhibit the willingness to travel. The main working language is English. Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-L Ost), depending on qualifications up to E 14.

FELLOWSHIP to conduct research in the field of "Large-scale climate variability and water cycle" ENEA/Ente Nazionale per le Nuove Technologie, l'Energia e l'Ambiente (Rome, Italy) 30 Sept. 2008

Candidates should be EU citizens, with less than 4 years of research experience since gaining a university diploma giving access to doctoral studies. Applicants should have a background in climate sciences. The position is for 12 months with a possible extension of up to 18 months. Salary is 2000 Euros/month before tax.

Quantifying how the vegetation influences regional rainfall in seasonally dry Mediterranean environments is a key scientific and societal issue. It has huge implications for designing better strategies for water conservation and understanding how Climate Change and land cover changes in the future will impact the patterns and seasonal intensity of rain.
